FOWG - Gnawing on the Body of Christ (Are we Catholics cannibals?!)

The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” So Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever.” He said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue at Capernaum. When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This teaching is difficult; who can accept it?” Because of this, many of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him. [ John 6:52-60, 66]

Have you ever wondered about this mind-boggling idea of eating the flesh of Jesus? Have you ever doubted that God is truly present in that little piece of communion host we receive on our hands? Ever wondered why so many of us keep going for Adoration and stare at what seems to be just some metal encasing a circular wafer? Is Jesus really there?

Well, you are not alone! :)

As we read in the Gospels, many people (who consider themselves disciples of Jesus) have been unable to accept this teaching of Jesus even while He was walking the Earth. More than 2000 years later, many disciples and non-believers alike still question and doubt the reality / possibility of God being present in the form of something that human hands (and now machines) can make. Believing in the Real Presence of the Eucharist really requires us to recognise God's power over creation, and for us to take our own leaps of faith.

Let me share with you my own story :D When I was 18, God found me, a wayward sheep who relied on my own intelligence and could not see beyond the human failings of others. After experiencing His call to restore our relationship and to come back to Him, I started attending a variety of Protestant church services, trying to discover where God was. To my disappointment, I could not find Him in the Anglican church, nor in the mega churches, nor with the Mormons. Although I experienced a great deal of Christian love from my schoolmates who were so alive in their faith and who encouraged me to pray and reassured me that God loves me, I could not find the same God who called me, in their churches. I kept feeling a sense of emptiness after the services / cell groups were over. I had this nagging feeling that something was missing from their churches.

One afternoon as I walked into Nativity Church to pray and ask God where He was, it struck me that He had been here, right at my doorstep, all along! He had been here all along, that was the reply from God. I felt so silly! I had gone all around Singapore trying to find God when actually He was in my neighbourhood! And then it dawned on me that what was missing from the other churches, was the Real Presence of God. I can't explain exactly how I knew that, but it must have been the Holy Spirit. The one thing that we have, which other churches don't have, is this privilege of having God's Presence in the Blessed Sacrament!

It is not an easy leap of faith, and I have had my own periods of doubt too. By God's Grace, He has helped me to see beyond the material, to grow in my knowledge of the sacraments, and to be convicted of His Presence in the Eucharist, which is only made possible through the actions of the priest when he consecrates the hosts and wine. The words spoken by the priest, through the Holy Spirit, effect the transformation of the ordinary food and drink, into the Body and Blood of Christ, just as Jesus commanded centuries ago.

As we reflect on the 'miracle' of the Body & Blood of Christ whose feast we celebrated last Sunday, let us also remember that when we receive Holy Communion, we receive Jesus with all His Divine power, not only to sanctify ourselves, but really to be sent out to sanctify the world! As we eat of the Body of Christ, we becomethe earthly Body of Christ, and we are meant to be Christ to others. As Jesus said, "Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them."

I leave you with a quote from St Augustine of Hippo:
If you, therefore, are Christ's body and members, it is your own mystery that is placed on the Lord's table! It is your own mystery that you are receiving! You are saying "Amen" to what you are: your response is a personal signature, affirming your faith. When you hear "The body of Christ", you reply "Amen." Be a member of Christ's body, then, so that your "Amen" may ring true! [Sermon 272; read the whole sermon online here]
In times when we find it difficult to have faith in the Eucharist, may we all pray the words of the man who begged Jesus to help him: "Lord, I believe! Help my unbelief!" [Mark 9:24]

Feeding on the Word of God - the Holy Spirit

John 14:16-17 “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you.”

The Holy Spirit & the Trinitarian God
As we celebrate Pentecost Sunday, let us try to leave behind the images of the Holy Spirit manifested as a dove, as tongues of fire, or as ‘breath’. Not that these images are ‘wrong’, but let us try to contemplate the Russian orthodox icon by Andrey Rublev who depicts the Holy Trinity as 3 persons looking at each other in ‘communion’.
This icon (also known as “Hospitality of Abraham”) was inspired by the appearance of the 3 angels who visited Abraham and prophesised that his wife Sarah would bear a son. [Genesis 18:1-14] These 3 angels who visited Abraham in the Old Testament were interpreted to be the 3 Persons of God, and Rublev’s icon became a most important image visually depicting the Trinitarian God as three distinct Persons yet the same One God.

Some years ago, I read a booklet that explained the meaning and symbolism of the 3 men in this icon and my concept of the Holy Spirit was altered forever. I became more aware of relating to the Holy Spirit as a Person who journeys with me in my daily life (a.k.a. Paraclete), a Person who dwells within me, and a Person who carries out the work of the Father after the Ascension of Jesus.
This icon also reminds me that God is a ‘community’, and so in wanting to imitate God, I cannot live my faith life alone. I also like how the empty space in front of the chalice invites us to partake of this meal with God. It is like an open invitation from God to join in His divine life, to be loved by Him, and to sit down and chillax with Him. This is especially poignant for me as I am aware that in my own busy and independent lifestyle, I hardly spend any time eating with others. In actual fact, I hardly spend any time intentionally sitting down for a meal without doing something else simultaneously (checking emails, watching TV, replying Whatsapp messages etc). I guess, in the same way, I hardly leave any time to spend a meal with God too.
So perhaps, that should be our reflection this week:
·         Do I / have I intentionally spent time with God or my loved ones?
·         Do I desire to be part of this ‘Divine community’ and grow my relationship with God?
·         What is my response to the Lord’s invitation through this icon?

I invite you to spend some time to ask the Holy Spirit to be present in your quiet time, look carefully at the icon, and be open to the Lord’s promptings.
John 14:26-27 “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.”

From EWTN’s article of Rublev’s icon:“Rublev's Trinity is not only an unsurpassed work of Russian iconography, it is also a first-class figurative "theology of the Trinity". It instructs the faithful and non-believers alike that the revelation of the triune God is one of unity in Divine Essence and trinity in Divine Personhood. Given its rich theological symbolism it is not surprising that the Roman Church has established this image as the model for explaining Trinitarian doctrine and inspiring devotion towards the mystery of the inner life of God.

The depiction of the Trinity as three identical figures remains rare in Christian art given that theology ascribes to each Divine Person distinct attributes, namely, to the Father, creation; to the Son,redemption, and to the Holy Spirit, sanctification. Rublev's icon is, however, more precise in expressing the concept of a God who is in Essence one and in Persons three. It illustrates the Church's term for the numerical Unity of God's Essence — (cf. Nicaea I, 325 AD) which seeks to explain the doctrine of the Trinity and reaffirm the principle of the Father and Son as "of one being" (or consubstantialem). This is the essence of Trinitarian theology and also the mystery of the internal life of God.”

Emmaus Walk E-bulletin (7th Sunday of Easter / Pentecost Sunday)

~ EMMAUS WALK ~

Hello Walkers! Last Sunday was the 7th Sunday of Easter, and this Sunday we celebrate Pentecost Sunday! Pentecost Sunday marks the birth of the Church, when the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples and they started proclaiming the Risen Lord and the Gospel to the world. We may wish all Christians "Happy Birthday", and reflect on these questions:

Is God truly alive in my life?
How am I proclaiming this to others?

Feeding on the Word of God - Mary, Spouse of the Holy Spirit

Mary, the Spouse of the Holy Spirit

And Mary said: ‘My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord and my spirit exults in God my saviour’ (Lk 1:46-47)

“The Blessed Virgin Mary was the only one who merited to be called the Mother and Spouse of God.” (St Augustine)

She became the Mother of God because she was the Spouse of the Holy Spirit: “The Holy Spirit shall come upon you, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow you” (Lk 1:35)

“The most glorious Virgin, Our Lady never had the form of any creature imprinted on her soul, and was never moved by any creature, but her actions were always inspired by the Holy Spirit.” (Ascent of Mt Carmel, III, 2,10, St John of the Cross)

Filled with grace from her conception, Mary is always the faithful Spouse of the Holy Spirit, attentive and docile to all His impulses and inspirations. If Mary’s sublime privileges are reserved for her alone, we can, nevertheless, imitate her interior dispositions by keeping out heart, in imitation of hers, always attentive and docile to the action of the Holy Spirit.

We must conclude that she was ever growing in grace, and that charity in her became a veritable abyss. Charity dilates the soul, that is may pour out on others the wealth it has accumulated.

Such is the characteristic of Mary’s charity. Her recollection did not hinder her from giving attention to her neighbor; on the contrary we see her always gracious and attentive to the needs of others. Furthermore, her own interior wealth urged her to desire to share with others the great treasures which she possessed. This is the attitude described in the Gospel, when immediately after the Annunciation, she undertook a journey “In haste”, as St Luke says, to visit Elizabeth. It would have been very pleasant for her to remain at Nazareth, adoring in solitude and silence the divine Word incarnate in her womb, but the Angel had told her of the imminent maternity of her aged cousin; this was enough for her to feel obliged to go Elizabeth and offer her humble services. We can say, therefore, that Mary’s first act after becoming the Mother of God was an act of charity towards her neighbor. “One who loves God, loves all that God loves.” (St Thomas Aquinas)

Reflection:
·         Do the blessings I receive from God make me grow in love for him and for my neighbor?
·         If I have received the gifts of the Holy Spirit, am I using them to serve people I come across? In what ways can I do so?
·         Do I ask for Our Lady’s intercession in being obedient to the promptings of the Holy Spirit?

Prayer:
‘It is true, O Mary, that on the day of my baptism the Holy Spirit diffused His charity in me, but my self-love has halted its growth, and I, who have so little love for my God, have likewise very little love for my neighbor. O most loving Mother, see how I need to have my heart dilated with charity! Stir up, then, and nourish that virtue in me and grant that, having given myself to the service of God, I may also give myself to that of my neighbor, with kindness and humility, promptness and generosity. Amen!’

Let us cry out with joy in the same words by Mary’s cousin Elizabeth: “Why should I be honoured with a visit from the mother of my Lord?’ Alleluia!

Feeding on the Word of God - HOLY SPIRIT

Galatians 5: 16-26 (Life by the Spirit)

So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law. The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

Father Robert Baron gives a very very very wonderful and illuminating preaching on the Scripture above and sheds light on the following questions:
  • How do I know that I am doing the will of God?
  • How do I know that I am allowing the Holy Spirit to move in me and through me?
  • What do love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control in the Holy Spirit mean and what do they look like?

His preaching beautifully defines what these fruits are and how they look in our dispositions and in our daily living! Do not miss an opportunity to listen to this teaching! - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1INut0Gi09Q
