Feeding on the Word of God - Prayer!

"Ask and it shall be given to you. Seek and you shall find. Knock and the door will be opened to you."

Hello Walkers,
This week let us hear what the bible has to say about Prayer!

In his homily he broke open the relationship between Moses and the Lord in a simple but profound way in order to teach us how to pray. Moses speaks freely in front of the Lord and in doing so teaches us how to pray without fear, freely, even with insistence.

What does the Bible say about Prayer?
The bible literally has a blue print on every aspect of prayer! Here is just a snap shot!

How do we pray?
  • What do I pray for? Phillipians 4:6 - “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God”
  • How often should I pray? 1 Thessalonians 5:17 - “Pray without ceasing”
  • Our motive for prayers needs to be in the right place. James 4:3 - “You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.”
  • What if I don’t know how or what to pray about? Romans 8:26 - “Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
  • Don’t forget to give thanks to God.  Colossians 4:2 - “Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving”

What should be our disposition in prayer?
  • Mark 11:25 - “And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.”
  • James 1:6-8 - “But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
  • Luke 18:1 - "Then He spoke a parable to them,  that men always ought to pray and not lose heart"
  • John 14:13-14 - “And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.”
God & Prayer
  • God gave up the best there was in Jesus, He will not withhold anything good from us. Romans 8:32 - “He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?”

Jesus Models Prayer for Us!
  • Did Jesus pray? Luke 5:16 - "So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed."
  • Jesus often rose early to pray. Mark 1:35 - “ Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed.”
  • Jesus understands all our needs as a close friend – He’s been there. Hebrews 4:15 - “For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin, let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
Reflection Question: What is one concrete action I can take to improve my prayer life today?

Amen.
