Seems like nowadays the middle of the week is not a good time for me to send out these emails... But nevertheless, thank God for this time that i have! We have quite a long email ahead, so hang in there!
Our theme, since 2 Sundays ago, is on Love and Sex. This is, of course, everyone's favourite topic, and it is worth spending more than a few weeks on it.
2 Sundays ago
Fr David Garcia, O.P. spoke on the Philosophy of the Body. Salient points:
(a) The body cannot be separated from the mind, it is not merely something to be used, unlike a car or a pencil. It is never "only my body".
(b) An act cannot be judged to be ethically right or wrong only by whether anyone is hurt from it.
(c) Our bodies have natural intimacy. Every culture protects this intimacy in its own way.
(d) We are like onions: all rolled-up, with a layered structure. Our bodies comprise all the layers. There is a less intimate outer layer and a more intimate inner layer.
Therefore, it is never "just my body". If it were so, then, for example, rape would be considered a physical aggression no more than other physical forms of assault.
"When you sleep with someone, your body makes a promise, whether you do or not." from Vanilla Sky
Last Sunday
We viewed a video from the Theology of the Body for Teens series on "Love Defined: Giving vs Using".
(a) There are 3 aspects of love: 1) attraction - recognising the good of another person; 2) desire - wanting good and happiness for yourself; 3) goodwill - willing / desiring the good of another person. Which come more naturally? Which are harder to learn?
(b) Chastity = love with responsibility. It is not merely abstinence.
"The greater feeling of responsibility for the person, the more true love there is." JPII, WYD 2000
This Sunday
