emmaus walk bulletin: the Elections Supplement

EW Exco Elections (Sun 30 Jan)

It has been two years of blessings, trials and more blessings, and it's time for the current exco to renew itself. As such, we will carry out elections 2 Sundays from now (30 Jan - sorry, no public holiday as it is a Sunday, and no off-in-lieu the next day too, since God's kingdom is not of this world). But please read the following carefully, especially if you are thinking of (a) nominating someone for election or (b) stepping forward to serve:

Some FAQs for you:

Q: Is the entire exco stepping down?
A
: No, most of us (if not all) will be nominated for elections. Who? Find out at the elections!

Q: What does it mean to accept a nomination? How do I know if God is calling me to serve the EW community as an exco member or in some other capacity?
A
: To accept a nomination doesn't mean you are automatically in the EW exco. The community will pray over the names of all nominees before making their vote, and only 7 can be in the exco at the end of the day.
To accept a nomination means that you are saying "YES" to serving the EW community in some capacity other than being a participant every week. This may happen in the form of being a PnW leader, musician, sharing group facilitator, session giver, etc etc. This is to say, a nomination is more than a calling to the EW exco. It is a calling to serve EW in some way. Do keep this in mind as you pray about whether to accept the nomination. As long as you are willing to serve this community, accept the nomination. If you do not get elected eventually, remember your commitment to service, keep up your prayer life, and God will show you in which area He actually wants you to serve.

Q. Who can be nominated for election?
A
: Anyone who is a part of this EW community can be nominated (i.e. if you are receiving this email, that's you!) Exceptions: If your salutation is of the form Fr, Br or Sr, then sorry, EW is too low-level for you...

Q. How to nominate someone else for election?
A: Step 1: Pray about the person in mind. Think about why you are nominating him/her and how he/she can serve in the EW community.
Step 2: Approach the person ASAP and let the person know you plan to nominate him/her. Ask him/her to pray about the nomination.
*This is very important. Please do not "sabo" anyone by nominating out of the blue on Election Day itself and putting him/her on the spot. Allow your nominee enough time to pray about it, at least a week.
Step 3: If the person (after prayer and due consideration) accepts your nomination, nominate the person on Election Day.
*In other words, all nominees on Election Day have already accepted the nomination.
*We really don't want the case where somebody's name comes up at the last minute and then that person has to decide in 30mins or so if he/she should accept the nomination.

Q. What happens if someone wants to nominate me?
A
: Step 1: Pray about it during the week.
Step 2: Decide if you should accept the nomination.
Step 3: Accept/reject the nomination accordingly on Election Day.

Q. What is the election procedure?
A
. We will let you know on Election Day itself.

Q. Who are the current exco members? Who can i approach if I need a sounding board for this?
A
: The current exco members are Sebby, Amanda, Adeline, Michelle, Elaine, Deborah, Isaac(on leave) and Barry. Please approach any of us if you wish to find out what it has been like serving in the Exco. We have Fr Henry and Sr Jessica available if you need a guide for the discernment process. And if you really need, Br Alphonsus, Br Cornelius and Br Samuel are the seminarians who have journeyed with EW at different times and in different ways, and they all continue to keep this community very much in their prayers, and i am sure they will be happy to help you in whatever way they can to discern.

[May i now invite you to pause for a moment and thank God? It is such a blessing that we always have had spiritual directors in some form, and we have so many people praying for us!]

Q: How long is the term of office?
A
: 2 years.

Q: I have more questions!
A
: Please approach any of the exco members and we will be happy to answer your questions.

If you don't have anyone that you wish to nominate, or are done nominating, you have the most important job to do, and that is to pray for the community!
Pray that
1) all nominations and the election process will be guided by the Holy Spirit;
2) all nominators and voters listen to God's promptings in the decison-making process;
3) all nominees will be courageous and generous with their gifts and talents and allow God to equip them as He deems fit.

i guess that's about all i have for you. Do keep everyone in your prayers as we carry on the new year and may the exco be renewed according to His will!

In His Love
